ブログの洋楽のカテゴリーがほとんどサイモン＆ガーファンクル ですがまたポール・サイモン の作品です。ブログを書き始めて思ったんですがこの人は詩人ですね。この曲はボブ・ディラン ばりの社会的メッセージを持ったプラテクトソング(抗議の歌)です。「教会は燃えている」という衝撃のタイトル。
1965年リリースの(The Paul Simon Songbook)からの作品です。

曲の意味を考える
教会を焼いたフードを被った男たちとは何者なのか？
教会を燃やしたのは白人か黒人か？
教会が白人支配の象徴で「もう奴隷にならない」と言っているから黒人の仕業だろう。と初めは思いました。しかし「フードを被った男」は白人至上主義者(KKK )の装いでもあります。
この曲がリリースされたのは1965年。1963年には有名なワシントン大行進がありました。黒人の公民権 運動の時代です。ポールはこれを支持していたようです。アメリ カの黒人の宗教ですが、白人だけでなく黒人も含めたアメリ カ国民のほとんどがキリスト教 徒でした。そして黒人教会は公民権 運動の拠点にもなっていたそうです。その教会が白人至上主義者により焼き払われた事件がこの頃起こっています。
繰り返し部での炎の言葉「教会を焼き払えばいい だが私は自由になる」とは黒人の不屈の精神を代弁しているのでしょう。ではやはり教会を燃やしたのは白人なのか。
でもこの曲の解釈は難しい。１番目のコーラス部、数時間前、教会で歌って手を叩いて「もう奴隷にならない」と言っていたのは黒人のはずです。彼らが松明を持って教会に向かうとなると黒人が教会を燃やしたとも読めるのです。
どちらの解釈が正しい？
ポールが公民権 運動に共感していたことを考えるとKKK の暴挙に対する抗議と考えるのが自然です。しかし１番の歌詞のように意図的に曖昧に書いて「黒人が過激な手段を取った」とも解釈できるようになっている。
繰り返し部の炎を言葉の解釈は
・白人が燃やした説 「白人至上主義者(KKK )が黒人の教会を焼いたが黒人は屈しない」
・黒人が燃やした説 「黒人自身が教会を焼いた。もう信仰に頼らず別の自由を求める」
となります。
まとめ
白人が燃やした説が有力です。でもどちらにも取れるように書いて曲の解釈を聞き手に委ねているとしたらお見事ですね(^^)
